Dear Pablo J.,

Just moments ago, Attorney General Abbott issued a statement outlining an agreement reached with some parties regarding the ongoing redistricting legal fight. The Texas Democratic Party was not involved in the discussions that produced this agreement, Democrats are not in agreement to the maps released by the Attorney General, and we do not expect that these maps will be used for the 2012 election.

We're greatly disappointed the Attorney General did not deal in good faith with all parties involved.

For the Texas Democratic Party, any maps that do not have the consent of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, the Legislative Black Caucus, and other plaintiffs are nonstarters.

The Attorney General is clearly terrified that the DC court will find that the state's maps are discriminatory in both effect and intent. Until there's a legitimate agreement among the parties, we support the court continuing to do its work.

Watch for further information on this very important issue.

Due to the primary being pushed back to April 3rd, a new filing period will re-open with a deadline of February 01, 2012. We anticipate that by that time there will be more candidates filing for office and state representative, senate, and congressional candidates will know which district they will run in. With this in mind HCDP has decided to CANCEL our much anticipated event READY TO RUMBLE.

The event will be rescheduled for FEBRUARY 01, 2012. Once a new flyer and new tickets are created we will send them out.

Pharr, Texas - Democrats are excited about election season! We are in the process of opening our Democratic Party headquarters, recruiting the remaining 50% of vacant precinct positions, gearing up for the first day of candidate filing (November 12, 2011), coordinating poll locations, and the administration/development of delegates to our County Convention.

In addition to organizing of the 2012 Election cycle, the Party is also involved in fundraising. Each year we present DISCO DONKEY, a fun filled night where elected officials, candidates for office, and Democratic activists perform a lip sync number or a karaoke version of their favorite disco song, while dressed in Disco garb. "The first two Disco Donkey events were very successful." stated Chairwoman Dolly L. Elizondo-Garcia. The Democratic Party has added a different twist to this years event by changing its theme to country western. The name for this years event is DISCO DONKEY goes COUNTRY. Democrats were notified of the event this summer and it would have been held in October 2011 except for the scheduling of seven fundraising events by candidates up for re-election or seeking office. The new date is now scheduled for Thursday, December 01, 2011 at the Texas Theater located at 115 E. Park, Pharr, Texas.

Any Democrat interested in performing a country western lip sync or karaoke number may call (956) 519-8683. Sponsorships and individual tickets will be available. Updates, the names of 2011 performers, past supporter lists and photos of past Disco Donkey events will be available online in the upcoming weeks at www.discodonkey.org. All proceeds benefit the Hidalgo County Democratic Party.

National Political Writer to Speak at HCDP's Spring CEC meeting

The Hidalgo County Democratic Party will host its Spring 2011 County Executive Committee meeting on Saturday, April 16, 2011, at the University of Texas-Pan American campus from 10:00am to 12:00pm. The meeting will be held at the ITT Building, located on Nevarez (4th st.) and 107 . Featured guest presenter is Huffington Post writer Rachel Farris. “We are gearing up for the 2012 election cycle,” states Dolly Elizondo-Garcia, HCDP Chair.

Native Texan and Democratic activist Rachel Farris writes MeanRachel.com, a progressive blog that follows politics, the legislature and how they both are affected by social media. She covered the 2008 Democratic National Convention with The Texas Observer team and has spoken about social media and communications at the University of Texas LBJ School of Public Affairs, Texas State University's "Mass Communications Week," and St. Edward's University. She also writes for The Huffington Post, currently serves on the board of Texas Democratic Women, and has served as the National Communications Director for the Young Democrats of America Women's Caucus. She is also known for her work at the Austin-based PetRelocation.com where she oversees operations and directs online communications strategies to create brand awareness and foster relationships with pet owners online.

Social media has become an integral part to conveying important political messages and information. Ms. Farris will be addressing that issue and will select a potential Democratic candidate from the attendees to receive a free consultation in setting up their respective social media pages including Facebook, twitter, and a campaign logo.

“Just as social media has opened a dialogue between businesses and consumers, its value is apparent to those in political office, whose work and very professional survival hinges on the needs and perceptions of their constituents.” Elizondo-Garcia states. “As it stands, the social web is ripe with opportunities for candidates and office holders alike to connect with voters, foster transparency, and even spar with opponents in the same ways they have been in the traditional media for hundreds of years. I expect the future of elected government to be measured in fans and followers, as well as votes,” Elizondo-Garcia added.

In addition to the C.E.C. conducting a regular business meeting, Democratic activists, potential candidates, and elected officials will have the opportunity to receive a legislative update from Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, District 20. Senator Hinojosa will speak on the current budget cuts facing our community, redistricting, and the importance of voting Democrat.

Key Points on the Voter ID Bill:

*The Voter ID bill is a destructive solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

*In 2006 Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott led a "voter fraud" goose chase that cost Texas taxpayers $1.4 million and failed to prosecute a single case of voter impersonation (the only type of voter fraud addressed by voter ID requirements).

*Voter ID legislation is opposed by nonpartisan groups like the League of Women Voters because it is an attempt to use the reins of government to gain partisan advantage by making it harder for certain Texans to vote - especially the elderly, low income families, and people of color.

*Texas lawmakers should focus on the real emergency - our state's $27 billion budget shortfall - and stop playing politics with voting rights.

Early Vote Ends Friday!

We are down to the wire with only a few days left to Early Vote! Hidalgo County voters have shown enthusiasm for this election and have already surpassed the number of votes cast in the last Governor’s race in 2006 -- but only 6,500 from District 41 have voted as of Monday. If you have not voted yet, please do so and remind your family and friends. Remember you can vote at any polling place during early vote, and polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Click here to find the closest location.
