TDP Platform Outlines the Need for Immigration Reform

President Obama outlined the need to put aside partisan posturing to enact comprehensive immigration reform that demands accountability and responsible action. Last week, the Texas State Democratic Convention adopted a 2010 platform that calls for a balanced federal immigration policy that secures our borders, imposes sanctions against those who hire undocumented workers, provides a path for qualified individuals to earn citizenship, and rejects state laws that would discriminate against American citizens and divert resources from local law enforcement. Texas Democratic Party Chairman Boyd Richie issued the following statement:

"Texas Democrats believe a real immigration solution can only be reached through honest and open dialogue, based on fact, not fear; guided by principle, not pandering, that will allow us to develop a long overdue comprehensive federal immigration policy.

"A real solution requires Federal action; a patchwork of state laws that threaten the rights of citizens and divert limited local law enforcement resources is no substitute for long overdue federal immigration reform.

"We support the President's effort to make immigration reform a priority, and we believe a majority of Texas voters will not look kindly on Republican politicians who would rather practice the politics of division instead of working for a real immigration solution.

"The difference between Democrats and Republicans is very clear: Texas Democrats want a real solution that respects the important role Hispanics have played in making Texas great. Many Republican politicians keep playing the blame game and alienating Hispanics by supporting laws that violate the rights of citizens and cast blame on the entire Latino community.

"Generations of Texas Hispanics have fought for our freedom, and Texans do not want to become another Arizona."

Democrats who have an interest in being considered for a place on the November general election ballot for the office of County Commissioner Precinct 1 will be answering questions at the public forum. Precinct Executive Committee members have been meeting regularly formulating questions for those Democrats who have expressed their interest in writing to HCDP Chair Dolly L. Elizondo. Fifteen Precinct Chairs, who represent Pct. 1, will call a meeting to order and vote for their candidate of choice immediately following the public forum. The meeting and the vote will be conducted before the general public who are invited and encouraged to attend.

The following Democrats have submitted a letter of interest and have answered a lengthy written questionnaire. Only those potential candidates who have answered the questionnaire will participate in the public forum. Deadline to submit the questionnaire is Friday, May 14 at 5pm

How to get on the Ballot

If you have ever wondered how it is that you can get your name on the ballot and be the next Sr. or Sra. Smith from the RGV who goes to Austin or Washington, the Hidalgo County Democratic Party has put together this brief overview of the process. It is our attempt to encourage more involvement in the Democratic process at every level.

Of course, your best resource is the Texas Democratic Party's mini-camps or online training, but here is a brief listing of some of the more important stages along the process:

1. Fill out your application for a place on the ballot. (Deadline to file 1/4/2010)

John Cornyn: No thanks to President Obama Q & A

Senate Republicans don’t have much of an appetite to give President Barack Obama their version of question-and-answer time — not after seeing how Obama handled House Republicans last week.

“We’re always happy to hear from the president, but I don’t really feel any compelling need to do it [on camera],” Texas Sen. John Cornyn, the Republicans' chief campaign strategist, told POLITICO.

The White House has suggested that it would like Obama to address the Senate GOP Conference, with TV cameras present. Obama administration officials are eager for voters to see Obama operate in a format he relishes — and handle his former Senate colleagues the same way he did last week to House Republicans at their annual retreat.

Asked about the White House invitation to Senate Republicans, Cornyn said: “For what purpose? Was it for photo op or is it serious? The president can invite Mitch McConnell, John Boehner or anybody he wants for a serious talk about issues.”

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said this week that Obama had been planning to meet with Senate Republicans and that he "wouldn't have any problem with it being open [to cameras] if we spoke to the Senate Republicans, too."

Obama had an on-camera question-and-answer session this week with Senate Democrats at their annual retreat at Washington’s Newseum, but there's little desire to a similar give-and-take among the entire 41-member Senate GOP Conference.

"They don't want anything to do with it," said a GOP insider. "They want the whole thing to just go away."

Republicans have considered several different formats for any session with Obama, including a "roundtable discussion," but don't believe that it will benefit them politically if Obama comes off as well as he did in Baltimore.

A top GOP aide said Senate Republicans "have already held their annual conference," and that, at this point, "there's nothing to invite the president to."

This source noted that Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) will be part of a "Big Four" meeting of top members from each party with Obama on Tuesday, the first in what is supposed to be a regular monthly session with the president.

"If they want to put that on camera, we'd support that," said the GOP aide of the White House.

Cornyn acknowledged that Obama was "in his element" in his meeting with House Republicans.

"I can see why he and his handlers would want to replicate that,” Cornyn said. "I think we’re more interested in serious public policy issues rather than providing another photo-opportunity for the president.”
